Day 76: Rosedale to Damascus: 35 miles Nice short day today. We needed a bike store and they are hard to come by. There are 4 in this town because of the Virginia Creeper Mt Bike trail that runs through here. 34 miles of old railway bed. I needed new back brakes and a new back tire and Frank needed a new pair of shorts. I have a theory about the Kentucky crazy dogs myth. We and the British kids were sort of disappointed that it never amounted to much It is perpetrated by the WB riders. They come from riding in beautiful peaceful Virginia. As soon as they enter Kentucky there is a whole different feel. Much edgier. Their first major climb in Kentucky is the lovely downhill through the single lane hollow that we did a couple of days ago. We go through there at 15-30 mph ( or more for some of the guys) They come through it at 5-10 mph. There are dogs barking and running their fence and yard lines the whole time. I think it could be quite intimidating. And some of the dogs do come out on the road. Anyway, it was pretty uneventful for us. We are at a great hiker/cyclist hostel. (no outrageous proprietor) Off to dinner at Fatties, have heard about it from other riders.
PS Frank had a great beer at Fatties. Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber Lager
