June Curry, The Cookie Lady, and proprietor of "The Bike House"
Leaving the "Bike House" for a short days ride into Charlottesville. We have had some great riding days.
Memorabelia (sp?) in the "Bike House"
VMI...a memorie from Alison's previous life. Great to see all the women on campus. It was all male when Jan was there.
We see more confederate flags flying in Virginia than we would have thought.
It is All Downhill From Here!!
We went from Christiansburg to Daleville to the Mallard Duck Campground east of Lexington then on to Afton and into Charlottesville...
We have had some amazing riding. The WB riders had (along with the Kentucky Dog stories) told tales of the ride from the little town of Vesuvious up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were told to swallow our pride and just get off our bikes and walk. We were told of 12 % grades. So we left the Mallard Duck campground in trepidation. And then we kept waiting for it to happen...Not that is wasn't steep, but it was not 12 % and the switchbacks had nice flat spots between the curves so you could recoup before the next rise. So lesson learned, again...don't listen to those tales!!
Riding the Parkway was great fun. We had a beautiful day, practically no traffic and we ran into some other riders that we had ridden with before. We ended up in Afton at the Cookie Lady's Bike House. It was like sleeping in a museum. This woman (June Curry, 88 ) has been hosting cyclists in this 4 bedroom house since 1976. The house is full of write ups, postcards, bicycle parts, T-shirts, books, whatever. She talked to us for about an hour, telling us all sorts or stories.
It was quite an experience.
Easy ride into Charlottesville, where I tried to find some connection with this bustling town and the place I lived in 1973. I recognized some parts of the campus and that was about it.
Looking forward to connecting with Woodi and Murphy on Saturday.
Must be all downhill from here as the Parkway is 3200 feet and we will be at sea level next Tuesday.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am Tak Hirai's (secretary at Finn Hill) son that lives in Charlottesville and my mom sent me your link and think it is inspirational that you are doing this and wish I could have met you when you were here. Good luck on your journey.

If you get into Spotsylvania County, you might pass the old Spotsylvania HS, my first teaching job in 1967. It's just down the road from the courthouse that was the focus of a Civil War battle. You can still see trenches in the national battle field there.
ReplyDeleteKeep safe.
