Days 46 to 48: Leoti to Larned KS

Welcome to Kansas. Check out the horizon!!
Sunflowers and black eyed susans are all along the roads as we ride.

A rainbow during the thunderstorm. You can see some hail stones on the street.

Kansas is not all corn. These oil pumps are all over the fields.

A typical Kansas scene. Lots of corn and feed lots

This was our B&B last night. We really ate well.

Frank describes riding in Kansas like riding on the Skagit Flats. I think it is like riding a stationary bike. Just pick a cadence, pedal, and ride for hours. The wind ultimately determines our speed. I mentioned to Frank that my legs get tired of just going around. He looked incredulous and said "you are on a bike trip, what did you expect?" Riding in Kansas has been a pleasant surprise. It has been pretty and peaceful. It is the nights that are wild and unpredictable.
Met 7 riders today. One of them wins the award for the dirtiest rider we have seen. He is a delightful kid and is going to be a band teacher. He hasn't paid to camp yet. Last night, during the thunderstorm, he put his tent up inside the bathroom at the rest stop.
Staying at Elaine's Bicycle Oasis was a lot of fun. Like going to a friends for dinner. Great food...bulgar patties, baked potato smothered in stewed summer squash and corn right off the stalk! Then strawberries, brownies and ice cream....we ate way too much. An amazing lightening and wind storm last night. I was glad (again) that we were not in our tent.

  1. I liked living in Kansas. Eastern Ks has more hills and plateaus. At least the part where we were did.

  2. BTW - The wind NEVER stops blowing in Kansas. Ever.

I loved the wild sunflowers everywhere.
